Several changes and developments are coming to the Meribel valley in time for the fast approaching 2012/2013 winter season.  First up, in Meribel-Mottaret a new Plattiers lift is to replace the existing 20 year old Plattiers 1 and 2 gondolas and will be the first 10 seat gondola in the three valleys. The new lift promises to carry up to 40% more passengers, reaching up to 2,800 per hour and taking just 9 minutes rather than the previous 22 minute ride. This big project is due to a hefty 17.2 million euro investment by the S3V lift company and reflects the surge in development plans in the run up to the 2015 Alpine Skiing World Cup. Also in Meribel Mottaret, the Blue Martre piste is being given a makeover – the piste will be reshaped so that the snow stays in good condition for longer and the slope made more manageable for inexperienced skiers.

Meanwhile in Meribel centre the second phase of replacing the Saulire gondola lift is well under way (the first phase was completed in 2011) and the new lift should whizz you up to Saulire in almost half the time that it took previously.

But the exciting changes don’t stop when the lifts do and for those of you who take the après ski part of a trip as seriously as the skiing itself the news that the infamous La Folie Douce is arriving in Meribel this season will be another reason to party harder. For those who don’t already know, La Folie Douce is a group of après ski bars, the original is based in Val d’Isere but following its huge popularity another has been built in Val Thorens and now it’s Meribel’s turn to host the party! The bar will be located under the Saulire lift, replacing the restaurant Choucas, and a huge terrace will be built for the live music and DJ-ing that makes La Folie Douce such a popular spot. However it’s not fun and games all round as some locals are concerned by the excessive noise and irresponsible skiing as a result of heavy drinking.

Val Thorens can’t have all the fun to itself…
